At age 19, I was a star athlete and competitor, college football wide receiver, and champion kickboxer who’d just had his last fight televised on ESPN. Then, a devastating car accident broke my neck and paralyzed me from the chest down. Doctors told me I would most likely spend the rest of my life confined to a wheelchair.

That’s when I realized that, no matter what happens to us, we always have a choice: ‘We can choose to be bitter, or we can choose to be better. We can allow ourselves to feel powerless, or we can focus on what’s ours to control.’ That’s also around the time I became relentless in pursuit of my goal to stand again.

Not only did I turn that impossible goal into a reality, but I also went on to qualify for the prestigious Million Dollar Round Table with less than 8% of the world’s most successful life insurance and financial services professionals, successfully disrupted an entire industry in Southeast Asia, wrote a bestselling book, and became a top-rated inspirational speaker sharing my message about resilience with Fortune 500 organizations and audiences in Australia, Bermuda, Canada, India, Spain, the Czech Republic, and beyond.

In between, I learned to scuba dive and skydive, became an avid snow skier, and continue to hit balls on the golf course every chance I get. Everything I’ve accomplished wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t harnessed painstaking focus, unshakable optimism, and unwavering determination—or, as I like to call it, VISION, MINDSET, and GRIT.
